The BMW 3 Series is due for its next full redesign for the 2019 model year. Official details have not yet been announced, but we know that production of the iconic luxury sport sedan will eventually shift to a new factory in Mexico by 2019.
The redesigned 3 Series will most likely be based on BMW's modular platform dubbed CLAR, which stands for Cluster Architecture. This will allow the automaker to reduce development costs by using variable sub-modules to underpin multiple models. Similar moves toward modular platforms have been made by Volkswagen, Toyota and other automakers.
BMW plans to introduce semi-autonomous driving in the future, but it's unclear to what extent, if any, that the 3 Series will benefit from this.
An official release date for the next-generation 3 Series has not yet been announced. At this time, we expect it to go on sale sometime in 2018. Stay tuned for more precise information closer to the launch date.
