Overview

Fresh off a full redesign, the 2019 Audi Q5 is back with only minor changes. It hasn’t received the latest powertrain technologies, but it still carries the torch for Audi’s usual virtues: comfort, quality, and top-notch safety.

What's New for 2019

The Q5 gets a few aesthetic and trim changes. Heated front seats are now standard, along with electric rear child locks, Audi Connect CARE, a seven-inch driver display, and roof crossbars. There’s a new Black Optic Package, and the Premium Plus trim gains a few standard infotainment perks.

Choosing Your Audi Q5

Audi is making a clear effort to bring hybrid and electric technologies to many of its cars, but the Q5 hasn’t gotten the memo yet. It’s powered by a single engine, a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder producing 248 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. Power is sent through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive is standard on every Q5. The combination is good for an EPA-estimated 22 miles per gallon city, 27 mpg highway, and 24 combined, which is average among similar vehicles.

Perhaps because of the newly standard heated seats, Audi has rearranged the Q5’s interior slightly for 2019. The result is more rear leg room, but less cargo capacity – the rear can only hold 25.1 cubic feet of luggage, expanding to 53.1 cubes with the seats down.

In the safety department, the Q5 is up to date. Audi’s pre sense suite of safety technologies is included on all Q5s, including low-speed automatic emergency braking. The upper trims get even more tech, up to adaptive cruise control and a limited AI-driven traffic jam pilot.

Three available trims delineate the feature set:

Audi Q5

Premium

Despite being the cheapest Q5 at $43,945 (all prices include the $995 destination charge), the Premium is no slouch. Leather upholstery is standard, along with heated front seats, tri-zone automatic climate control, a 10-speaker audio system, and a seven-inch infotainment display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The exterior has 18-inch alloy rims, xenon headlights, roof rails, and automatic wipers.

The sole available package on this trim is a Convenience Package ($1,500), which adds eight-way power front seats with memory settings, keyless entry, remote start, heated and auto-dimming side mirrors, and satellite radio. The main standalone options are 19-inch wheels ($800), a panoramic sunroof ($1,450), and running boards ($1,100).

Audi Q5

Premium Plus

Stepping up to the Premium Plus trim bumps starting price to $50,945. For the price, buyers get the panoramic sunroof included, along with 19-inch wheels and full LED headlights. The driver gets Audi’s impressive “virtual cockpit,” a 12.3-inch digital display that shows everything from audio controls to Google Earth. A few extra safety sensors join the array, including rear cross-traffic alert. Features from the Premium trim’s Convenience Package are also standard.

A Warm Weather Package ($1,450) swaps in ventilated sport seats for the front row, with rear side-window shades as a bonus. For the opposite climates, a Cold Weather Package ($750) adds heated rear seats and a heated three-spoke steering wheel. The Black Optic Package ($1,300) does exactly what it promises and blacks out the exterior. Options include 20-inch rims ($800) and a premium Bang & Olufsen sound system ($950). Nixing the sunroof is a no-cost option.

Audi Q5

Prestige

For a starting price of $54,845, the Q5 Prestige pulls out the remaining stops. The premium sound system is standard, along with a surround-view camera and parking assist. The driver gets a head-up display, adaptive cruise control, active lane assist, and a limited AI traffic jam pilot.

The Warm Weather, Cold Weather, and Black Optic Packages all remain in place, and standalone options (where non-standard) remain the same as the Premium Plus trim.

CarsDirect Tip

The 2019 Audi Q5 Premium Plus gets excellent tech, but it sees a huge price hike. Better value is found in the base trim, which holds plenty of luxury for most buyers.

The 2019 Audi Q5 is a handsome, conservative compact luxury SUV with a strong engine, useful technologies, and a comfortable interior. It also brings more storage room to the segment than expected, but its price can quickly climb, depending on the trim and packages selected.

Best Value

Audi offers the 2019 Q5 in Premium, Premium Plus, and Prestige trims. A performance SQ5 model with a turbocharged V6 engine is marketed (and covered) separately. Under the hood is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with an output of 252 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. A seven-speed dual-clutch transmission sends power to all four wheels. This model makes an EPA-estimated 22 miles per gallon city, 27 mpg highway, and 24 combined. It has a maximum tow rating of 4,400 pounds.

The list of standard features is impressive and includes xenon headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels, leather-trimmed seats, a seven-inch digital instrument cluster, and a seven-inch screen with Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto smartphone compatibility. For this reason, we recommend the base Premium trim and adding a few upgrades to complete your build.

  • Model: 2019 Audi Q5 Premium
  • Engine: 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder
  • Output: 252 hp / 273 lb-ft
  • Transmission: Seven-speed dual-clutch automatic
  • Drivetrain: All-wheel drive
  • Fuel Economy: 22 City / 27 Hwy
  • Options: Azores Green Metallic paint ($595), a Convenience Package ($1,500, keyless entry doors and trunk, heated automatic power-folding side mirrors with memory, eight-way power front seats, SiriusXM satellite radio with a complimentary 90-day subscription)
  • Base Price: $43,945 (including the $995 destination charge)
  • Best Value Price: $46,040

Performance

Audi Q5

Speed is easy to find in the 2019 Audi Q5. Its turbocharged four-cylinder engine may displace at 2.0 liters, but it matches some small V6s in power output. The turbo-four makes 252 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque and is matched with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. Under hard acceleration, expect to go from zero to 60 mph in just under six seconds, which is surprisingly robust for this relatively heavy model.

The latest version of Audi’s famed quattro all-wheel-drive system now features a full rear axle disconnect for improved efficiency and a sportier drive. The system moves power between all four wheels for enhanced grip and control. The Q5 supplies a comfortable ride regardless of road conditions.

Style

Every Audi model delivers a common, conservative theme. Telling the differences between various models is difficult, particularly among like body styles. That’s on purpose as the Q3, Q5, Q7, and Q8 share a common theme.

That theme features clean lines, a bold front fascia, and sharp corners. Inside, the cabin continues with the conservative look, with a logical layout for controls and infotainment. The display screen is attractive with orange and white lettering on a black background. It's a display only as it doesn’t offer touchscreen control, however. Seating is ideal for four individuals or five for short drives.

The Best and Worst Things

In the Q5, Audi supplies a vehicle with good marks for crashworthiness and standard low-speed automatic emergency braking. The Q5 earns top safety scores from the two testing agencies. Like most competing models, fuel efficiency isn’t this model’s strong suit.

Right For? Wrong For?

Audi Q5

The Audi Q5 hits all the right buttons for anyone looking for a luxurious SUV for under $50,000. It combines top technology with ample storage space to supply the features customers want. On the other hand, its conservative style doesn't offer the flair of some models, such as the Mercedes-Benz GLC 300.

The Bottom Line

Hitting all the right marks, the 2019 Audi Q5 delivers a strong entry in a competitive segment. Its standard all-wheel drive is matched by few models and its list of included features is impressive. Pricing, however, can rise quickly when building a top-trim model.
