Overview

The Porsche Macan is the German automaker’s first entry into the compact crossover segment and has quickly become the best-selling model for the brand. On paper, it's easy to see why. With its popular body style and sports-car-like performance, the crossover has a lot of features that differentiates itself from competitors like the Jaguar F-Pace, Audi SQ5, and Mercedes-AMG GLC43. Available in trims that range from kind-of fast to brutally quick, the 2018 Macan really does spread Porsche’s rich history of making sporty, enjoyable machines to the crossover body style.

What's New for 2018

The 2018 Porsche Macan enters the new model year with minimal changes. Some new interior and exterior color choices are available, while Porsche will now pay for the Macan’s first scheduled maintenance service. The interior of the crossover also benefits from an improved carbon air filter.

Porsche Macan

Choosing Your Porsche Macan

The Macan may have the body of a crossover, but it has the look of a sports car and the performance components of one, too. The base Macan is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine that generates 252 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. The engine is paired to a seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) transmission as standard with power going to all four wheels through an all-wheel-drive system. It may be the base powertrain, but the Macan can get from zero to 60 miles per hour in just 6.3 seconds.

Stepping up to the Macan S brings a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine that makes 340 hp and 339 lb-ft of torque. The next step up is the Macan GTS that features a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine that produces 360 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. Zero to 60 mph takes just five seconds, while the crossover has a top speed of 159 mph. The GTS trim is the ideal choice for consumers looking to have usable performance in a versatile package.

Moving up to the Turbo trims brings an even more powerful 3.6-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine to the Macan. The larger V6 motor is good for 400 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. Sixty mph passes by in just 4.6 seconds, while the crossover has a top speed of 164 mph. The range-topping Macan Turbo with Performance Package has a tuned 3.6-liter twin-turbo V6 that cranks out 440 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque.

The most fuel-efficient Macan is the base model with the 2.0-liter turbo-four engine is rated to get 20 miles per gallon in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. On the other end of the spectrum, the Macan Turbo with the 3.6-liter twin-turbo V6 is only rated to get 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway.

Besides the extra boost in power, the Macan Turbo with Performance Package comes with a lot of the same standard features as the Macan Turbo. The Premium Package Plus is the only available package for the trim.

CarsDirect Tip

Choosing what kind of performance you want out of your Macan is the easiest way of choosing a trim. The Macan S, with its 340-hp engine and affordable price tag is a great option. As with any Porsche, things can quickly get out of hand for the Macan S, as the automaker allows consumers to change every little component of the vehicle at a price. The Premium Package is reasonable priced and brings a good amount of features, while those looking to make their Macan sportier should look into the Sport Chrono Package, Sport Exhaust System, and Porsche Active Suspension Management.

The 2018 Porsche Macan, the smaller of the automaker's crossovers, is surprisingly beloved by Porsche faithful, as the model never went through the traditionalist revolts the Cayenne and Panamera did. But this lack of hatred is for good reason, as the Macan is a performance crossover in every single flavor – from the base model to the Turbo.

Best Value

When shopping for the 2018 Porsche Macan, you're greeted by four trims: base, S, GTS, and Turbo. In the grand scheme of things, the Macan S delivers a great balance of luxury, performance, and drivability without burning your bank account too much.

The 2018 Porsche Macan S comes standard with a slew of features, including a 10-speaker audio system, a seven-inch touchscreen, two USB ports, a SiriusXM receiver, Bluetooth, a programmable garage door opener, automatic bi-xenon headlights, LED taillights, 18-inch wheels, tri-zone climate control, and more. In addition to its standard features, you may also find the $5,700 Premium Package Plus a nice optional upgrade.

Performance

Porsche Macan

Porsche officially perfects the performance crossover with the Macan. No matter what trim you opt for, it's zippy and handles like, well, a higher-riding Porsche. What’s more, despite carving canyons with the best of them, the 2018 Macan also rides nicely under normal driving conditions.

Every single Macan comes standard with Porsche’s famed seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, which delivers precision shifts and adjusts nicely to fit the driving style. That said, this eliminates the ability to get a manual transmission, so don’t even bother asking.

Despite its small size, the 2018 Macan is far from fuel efficient. Its base four-cylinder engine turns in EPA ratings of 20 miles per gallon city, 25 mpg highway, and 22 combined. Macans with the V6 engine get even worse mileage at 17 mpg city, 24 highway, and 19 combined.

Style

The 2018 Porsche Macan’s styling is sharp and a derivative of the brand’s iconic sports cars and the Cayenne. Unfortunately, though, the Cayenne just went through a refresh, leaving the Macan as a bit of an outsider, albeit a good-looking one.

The Macan’s interior is refreshingly classic Porsche. Its styling is toned down but refined, and its array of buttons give the driver redundant access to features that are also available via its standard touchscreen. In many cases, too many buttons is a bad thing, but Porsche does it just right in the 2018 Macan.

While the front seats are roomy and very comfortable, the rear seats are tight for taller adults. The cargo area is also tighter than average with just 17.7 cubic feet of cargo room with the seats up and 53 cubes with the seats down. Also, the oddly shaped, narrow luggage compartment makes toting cargo even tougher.

The Best and Worst Things

The best thing the 2018 Porsche Macan has to offer is its delicate combination of power, performance, and luxury. No one does it as well as Porsche.

But it's still a Porsche, and Porsche’s are expensive. While its base price is very inviting to new buyers, the Macan can quickly shoot over six figures as you add options.

Right For? Wrong For?

Porsche Macan

The 2018 Porsche Macan is perfect for the younger professional looking for a relatively inexpensive luxury SUV that has a little oomph behind it.

Families will find its rear seats a little too tight as the kiddos age, plus the cargo area is way too small for the entire family’s hauling needs.

The Bottom Line

The 2018 Porsche Macan is the pinnacle of crossover performance in all trims. It's the perfect blend of everything a young professional would want in their performance crossover. If kids are in the plans, though, the Macan may be better suited as a gateway vehicle to the Cayenne.
