Overview

Compact crossover SUVs provide a reasonably priced gateway to luxury marques. The 2018 Lincoln MKC is the brand’s most affordable model, offered in four trims, including Black Label with available concierge services.

What's New for 2018

For 2018, all models gain Lincoln Connect, the brand’s 4G wi-fi hotspot platform. The remaining changes cover trim leveling shuffling.

Choosing Your Lincoln MKC

Designed to seat five, but most comfortable for four, the 2018 Lincoln MKC tackles the small crossover SUV segment with gusto, delivering four grades: Premiere, Select, Reserve, and Black Label. Standard equipment includes automatic Xenon headlights, 18-inch painted aluminum wheels, a power liftgate, push-button start, a rearview camera, a nine-speaker audio system, and heated front seats.

The MKC provides standard front-wheel and available all-wheel drive ($2,410 extra) with two engine choices. A 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder generates 245 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque. This model earns an EPA-estimated 21 miles per gallon in the city and 28 mpg on the highway, or 19/25 mpg city/highway with all-wheel drive.

Also available is a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 285 hp and 305 lb.-ft. of torque, paired with all-wheel drive only. Models equipped with this engine earn an EPA-estimated 18 mpg city and 25 mpg highway.

A six-speed automatic transmission works alongside both engines. This model has a maximum available tow rating of 3,000 pounds regardless of engine choice.

Nine or 10 exterior color choices are available on most models, including five special choices costing $695 each.

Lincoln MKC

Premiere

The entry-level Premiere starts at $34,280 (prices include the $925 destination charge). In addition to the aforementioned standard equipment, the Premiere supplies 18-inch aluminum wheels, remote start, leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, power-controlled front seats with driver lumbar control, and a 60/40 reclining and split fold-down rear seat. The standard technologies include a SYNC interface, Bluetooth connectivity, Lincoln Connect, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone compatibility, satellite radio, and two USB ports. There are no available packages with this trim.

Lincoln MKC

Select

From $37,035, the MKC Select builds on the Premiere by adding configurable daytime running lamps, power-folding side mirrors, ambient lighting, and semi-micro perforated leather seats. You’ll also find a power tilt-and-telescopic steering column, retractable cargo cover, and genuine wood trim on the instrument panel and doors. At this trim level, shoppers may opt for the upgraded engine with all-wheel drive, adding $3,550 to your cost. Options include the Class II Trailer Tow Package ($645); adaptive suspension ($650); the Climate Package ($605) which adds a heated steering wheel, heated outboard rear seats, and automatic high beams; a 14-speaker THX II audio system ($995); and the Select Plus Package ($1,100) with navigation, traffic alerts, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.

Lincoln MKC

Reserve

Pricing for the MKC Reserve starts at $40,910. The Reserve trim adds a hands-free liftgate, heated and cooled front seats, navigation, a 110-volt outlet, a dual-pane panoramic sunroof, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. Optional packages include: the Class II Trailer Tow Package ($555), Climate Package ($605), and the Technology Package ($2,295) which brings lane keeping assist, forward collision warning, active park assist with park out assist, and adaptive cruise control with collision warning and brake support.

Lincoln MKC

Black Label

With a starting price of $46,900, the Black Label edition provides customers with a choice of three themes, representing interior color choices. Black Label also represents a Lincoln membership program with concierge services, including a maintenance plan, maintenance pickup and delivery, free car washes, annual detailing, and travel and culinary services. Black Label services are only available through participating dealers. Other interior changes include a simulated suede headliner, leather upholstery, and unique trim. Customers have a choice of seven exterior color choices, including three exclusive choices ($1,750 each).

CarsDirect Tip

If you’re looking for options, start your search at the MKC Select trim. We recommend adding navigation through the Select Plus Package and all-wheel drive for customers who regularly encounter winter driving conditions.

The 2018 Lincoln MKC is a luxury compact crossover, offering significant value in a typically pricey segment. Turbo engines, quality interior materials, and an improved infotainment system are among this model’s strongest attributes.

Best Value

The 2018 Lincoln MKC is a five-passenger compact crossover. It comes in four trims: Premiere, Select, Reserve, and Black Label. Standard front-wheel drive, available all-wheel drive, and two engine choices give shoppers much to consider.

We think shoppers will prefer the Reserve, which comes with the standard engine, a power liftgate, a power tilt-and-telescopic steering column, 12-way power front seats, heated and cooled front seats, and blind-spot monitoring.

  • Model: 2018 Lincoln MKC Reserve

  • Options: MKC Technology Package ($2,295, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with brake support, lane keeping assist, auto start/stop technology, active park assist).
  • Base Price:$40,910 (including the $925 destination charge)
  • Best Value Price:$43,205

Performance

Lincoln MKC

The 2018 Lincoln MKC comes with a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine that makes 245 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque. This engine sends power to the wheels by means of a six-speed automatic transmission.

The Lincoln MKC does not lack for power, regardless of the engine selected. The base engine is also available in the Ford Escape (on which this model is based), while the larger engine is exclusive to the MKC (and also used in the Mustang). Upgrading to the larger engine also means all-wheel drive, which makes sense with the added power sent to the wheels.

Ride and handling compare favorably to other models in the segment, including the BMW X1 and Audi Q3. The MKC’s sport setting seems firmer than what we’d prefer, while at the same time giving us the grip we want and with little lean of note.

Style

Lincoln’s winged grille dominates the front fascia, a design that hasn’t been especially well received. At least the look seems more at home in the MKC than in other models. It's not too hard to see the resemblance to the Ford Escape with this model, but there's enough differentiation in body sculpting and lines to set the MKC apart.

Inside, the cabin shines with elegant and comfortable front seats, clean lines, and an uncluttered cabin. And then there is the push-button transmission control on the dashboard. It seems more gimmicky than anything else, although it does allow for some extra room up front. The rear seat is snug, no matter how you look at it. It offers seating for three, but two is more like it. Even then, youngsters fit comfortably, but not adults. If you prefer to fold the rear seat flat, cargo volume expands from 25.2 cubic feet to 53.1 cubic feet.

The Best and Worst Things

This little Lincoln crossover lives up to its name quite well, especially in the choice of interior materials used. The Black Label trim raises the luxury level further, but at a cost ($50,000) we think few are willing to bear.

The 2018 MKC doesn’t match the safety systems found in more modern models and that’s something more shoppers expect as they have their minds set on semi-autonomous driving.

Right For? Wrong For?

Lincoln MKC

If you want to make the move to the Lincoln brand, the MKC offers the lowest cost of all models with a starting price below $35,000. Of course, we think customers will want more features, therefore, a price of around $40,000 should do it.

The luxury SUV market is well represented by small crossovers from nearly every brand. If you’re looking for the most modern models, Mercedes-Benz and Audi have them. This doesn’t mean the MKC is dated, rather it's a half-step behind the pack.

The Bottom Line

Lincoln’s revival hinges on its entire product line, but great weight is placed on higher volume models, such as the MKC. Lincoln loads the 2018 MKC reasonably well, undercutting the German manufacturers, while staying in line with Acura and INFINITI.
