Overview

Full-size pickup trucks like the 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD are extreme, heavy-duty machines that are ready to answer the call of having to tow up to 18,000 pounds. Sitting in the middle of Chevrolet’s pickup-truck lineup, the 2500HD occupies the segment for consumers looking for more capability than the base Silverado 1500 can provide, but not enough to require the extra oomph from the 3500HD.

What's New for 2018

With the addition of a new engine for 2017, the 2018 model gets minimal changes, amounting to little more than new colors minor equipment changes.

Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD

Choosing Your Chevrolet Silverado 2500

As with the previous year, the Silverado 2500HD comes in a total of five different configurations – regular cab with a long box, double cab with a standard box, double cab with a long box, crew cab with a standard box, and crew cab with a long box. The Regular Cab is a three-seater, the Double Cab offers a full-length rear seat with small rear doors, and the Crew Cab has full-size rear doors and a spacious backseat.

Opting for the Regular Cab requires the eight-foot long box, while the Double and Crew Cabs can be fitted with the long eight-foot box or a standard 6.5-foot box.

The standard engine is a 6.0-liter V8 that produces 360 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque that’s matched to a six-speed automatic transmission. The next step up is a Duramax 6.6-liter turbodiesel V8 that generates 445 hp and 910 lb-ft of torque. The diesel engine is matched to an Allison six-speed automatic transmission.

Rear-wheel drive is standard on all Silverado 2500HD trims and all-wheel drive is a $2,955 option. All trims are fitted with an automatic locking rear differential as standard, automatic grade braking, trailer sway control, and an integrated cruise control system. When properly equipped, the pickup truck is capable of towing up to 18,000 pounds and can carry 3,534 pounds in its bed.

The Silverado 2500HD is available in four different trims, including WT, LT, LTZ, and High Country.

Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD

WT

Stepping into either the Double Cab or Crew Cab models adds a six-speaker audio system and power windows as standard.

Available packages for the WT trim include the Convenience Package ($1,175) that adds tinted windows, a 110-volt AC power outlet, remote keyless entry, a remote locking tailgate, a rear vision camera, heated, power-adjustable exterior mirrors in black, and power windows on Regular Cab models.

Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD

LT

The LT trim starts at $39,470 for a Regular Cab with a Long Box and comes with deep-tinted glass, 17-inch aluminum wheels, EZ-Lift and Lower tailgate, Chevrolet MyLink with an eight-inch touch screen, Bluetooth, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a rear vision camera, and remote keyless entry as standard.

Adding the Convenience Package ($1,230) adds a 10-way driver’s seat, a remote vehicle starter system, rear-window defogger, manual tilt and telescoping steering column, an 110V AC power outlet, and dual-zone climate control on Crew Cab and Double Cab models. The Driver Alert Package ($845) includes a variety of safety features, including lane departure warning, forward collision warning, a safety alert rear seat, and front and rear parking sensors.

Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD

The LTZ Plus Package ($1,165) adds a heated steering wheel, power adjustable pedals, Front and Rear Park Assist, and a Bose premium audio system.

Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD

High Country

The range-topping High Country trim is only available in the Crew Cab configuration and has a starting price of $56,160. The High Country trim comes with 20-inch chromed-aluminum wheels, a unique grille, unique body-color front and rear bumpers, unique Saddle or Jet Black leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, a six-inch chrome assist step, front and rear parking sensors, a spray-in bedliner with Chevy logo, a Bose audio system, Chevrolet MyLink with navigation on an eight-inch touch screen, the Driver Alert Package, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a heated steering wheel as standard.

The Duramax Plus Package ($8,800) adds a 6.6-liter Turbo-Diesel V8 engine, an Allison six-speed automatic transmission, a 3.73 rear axle ratio, an engine block heater, and heated power-adjustable vertical trailering mirrors in chrome.

CarsDirect Tip

With the amount of options and configurations that are available on the Silverado 2500HD, finding the right pickup can be a tricky task. Narrowing a configuration down by how many seats are needed is a good starting point. Consumers looking purely for a work truck will be pleased with the base LT trim, while the Convenience Package is a must-have. Others looking for a truck to enjoy driving everyday will find the LTZ trim as the most tempting option.

Choosing a heavy-duty truck makes perfect sense for some individuals who need the payload and pulling power. The 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD is a heavy-duty pickup truck ideal for businesses as well as for recreationists who prize strong pulling power.

Best Value

The 2018 Chevy Silverado 2500HD comes in regular, double, and crew cab configurations and your choice of engines and drivetrains. You get standard and long bed choices too. For some, the size will depend as much on the cap you choose.

We chose the crew cab with four-wheel drive, as this combination ensures the maximum number of people and the extra grip needed when roads are slick. The LT trim has cloth seats, an EZ lift and lower tailgate, satellite radio, Chevrolet MyLink, connected services and 4G LTE Wi-Fi.

Opting for the diesel engine is an expensive proposition, but it's something we chose for two reasons: 910 pound-feet of torque at the ready and engine longevity. When you buy a heavy-duty truck, you typically plan to keep it for many years. This Duramax diesel with its powerful Allison transmission has that longevity in mind. It's one step above the bare bones Work Truck trim and just below the well-equipped LTZ.

  • Model: 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD LT Crew Cab Standard Box
  • Engine: 6.6-liter turbodiesel V8
  • Output: 445 hp / 910 lb-ft
  • Transmission: Six-speed automatic
  • Drivetrain: Four-wheel drive
  • MPG: N/A
  • Options: Four-wheel drive ($3,300), Duramax 6.6-liter turbodiesel V8 engine ($9,395, heavy-duty transmission), Convenience Package ($1,425, remote starter system, rear-window defogger, dual-zone climate control, 10-way power driver's seat, tilt and telescoping steering wheel, 110 AC power outlet)
  • Base Price: $44,895 (including a $1,395 destination charge)
  • Best Value Price: $59,015

Performance

Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD

This model’s strength is under the hood where the mighty diesel holds sway. It's a 6.6-liter V8 powerhouse, a turbodiesel making 425 horsepower and a whopping 910 pound-feet of torque. You should allow the second number to sink in for a moment: that’s brute strength at the ready!

At first, the Silverado 2500HD lumbers along, but it responds with authority when you need a strong boost of power. You can pull that trailer, fill the bed, and carry a full contingent of passengers and the engine won’t groan under pressure. The transmission keeps up too and it doesn't hunt for gears.

Like other Silverado models, the 2500HD rides best with weight on the rear wheels because that’s the whole point of this vehicle. Otherwise, the ride is middling at best under most circumstances. Low-speed maneuverability is quite good and handling is fairly nimble with all things considered.

Style

The Silverado 2500HD looks like a Chevrolet and that’s not a bad thing. Then again, the design isn’t especially inspiring, especially as Ford and Ram models deliver a fresher or more invigorating look. Overall, the design is massive with a big grille, wide hood, strong shoulders, and a long, slab body. There are some differences between light- and heavy-duty models, including the wheel well arches; otherwise, the similarities between Silverado models are strong.

Inside, the cavernous interior is comfortable, open, and will make you feel at home even if you're at work. The cloth seats get the job done and are a step up from vinyl, yet a step down from leather. There's ample room for a big driver and the passenger up front. The rear seat holds three with ease and you'll appreciate the space it affords your children if you're buying one for a family.

The Best and Worst Things

The best thing about most any heavy-duty truck has everything to do with payload and towing. Our model as configured pulls 13,000 pounds and that should serve most any need. Of course, fuel economy is always an issue, although those numbers aren't published for these models. Figure that the diesel will offer a slight improvement over the gas model, but not nearly as much as you might have thought.

Right For? Wrong For?

Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD

Business folk and families pulling a large trailer will gravitate to this model. Sure, you may have some pulling power left, but you'll also have the security of a strong powertrain at the ready. Likewise, if you pull but don't need anywhere near the towing capacity, then the 2500HD is simply overkill. Look at the regular Silverado 1500 models instead.

The Bottom Line

You'll pay handsomely for a well-equipped Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD. Fortunately, “cash on the hood” can ease the cost. When equipped as suggested here, you can expect your Chevy to last many years. Amortize your cost and it all makes sense.
