Overview

Full-size sedans seem like a throwback to a bygone era, but the 2018 Chevrolet Impala is a thoroughly modern four-door with a roomy interior, huge trunk, and comfortable ride. Its sleek style and cutting-edge tech features amplify this contemporary conveyance.

What's New for 2018

Light changes accompany the 2018 Chevy Impala, including keyless entry, push-button start, and a standard rearview camera across the model line. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, Bluetooth, and MyLink with an 8-inch screen come to the base model.

Choosing Your Chevrolet Impala

Five adults sit in comfort in the front-wheel drive Chevy Impala. The large sedan features a plush interior and 18.8 cubic feet of storage space. Fold down the rear seat and the storage space rivals some SUVs.

Standard on the LS and LT trims is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine making 197 horsepower and 191 pound-feet of torque. Premier models get a 3.6-liter V6 engine (optional elsewhere) with 305 horsepower and 264 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission works alongside both engines.

Fuel economy comes in at an EPA-estimated 22 miles per gallon in the city and 30 mpg on the highway for the base engine, and 18 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway for the V6.

The 2018 Chevrolet Impala comes in LS, LT, and Premier trims.

Chevrolet Impala

LS

Priced from $28,770 (all prices include an $875 destination charge), the LS is generously equipped with daytime running lamps, power side mirrors, 18-inch steel wheels, keyless entry with push-button start, an eight-way power driver’s seat with lumbar support, an 8-inch color display with Chevrolet MyLink telematics, satellite radio, and OnStar with WiFi hotspot.

Chevrolet Impala

LT

Starting at $31,095, the LT delivers many of the amenities customers expect in a full-size sedan, adding heated side mirrors, painted alloy wheels, remote start, dual-zone climate control, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Numerous package options become available at this level, including a Convenience Package ($875) with heated front seats and steering wheel, automatic dimming rearview mirror, 120-volt power outlet, and a trunk cargo net. An Entertainment Package ($830) brings in navigation, a Bose 11-speaker audio system, CD player, and a 120-volt outlet. Other packages include Leather ($1,195); Driver Confidence ($495) with rear park assist, rear cross-traffic alert and lane change alert with side blind zone alert; Midnight Edition Appearance ($1,595) with black trim, wheels, and aluminum pedal covers; and a Sunroof and Spoiler Package ($1,275).

Chevrolet Impala

Premier

The V6 engine is standard with the Premier, retailing for $37,295. The Premier builds on the LT and adds HID headlamps, 19-inch machined-face aluminum wheels, dual-outlet exhaust tips, leather seats, power-controlled and heated front seats, and a host of safety technologies. In addition to the Midnight Edition Appearance Package ($1,195), buyers can opt for the Premier Confidence Package ($1,275) that adds adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, and 20-inch aluminum wheels and the Premier Convenience Package ($935) with ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and a power tilt and telescopic steering column.

CarsDirect Tip

The base LS is better equipped and a more compelling choice, especially with the V6 engine, but the LT brings features and amenities buyers expect in a large sedan.

The 2018 Chevrolet Impala's smooth ride, spacious interior, and sleek design make it a solid contender in the full-size sedan class.

Best Value

2018 Impala models range in price from $28,770 for the base LS trim to $40,500 for a fully-optioned Premier model (all prices include an $875 destination charge). We'd skip the LS, which offers only engine and wheel options, and instead choose the LT.

With a choice of two engines, the Impala LT starts at $32,190 and allows access to a number of option packages ranging from luxury, entertainment, and technology features to a small set of active safety systems.

  • Model: 2018 Chevrolet Impala LT
  • Engine: 3.6-liter V6
  • Output: 305 horsepower / 264 pound-feet of torque
  • Transmission: Six-speed automatic
  • MPG: 19 city / 28 highway
  • Exterior color: Cajun Red Tintcoat
  • Interior color: Jet Black/Dark Titanium cloth/leatherette
  • Options: 3.6-liter V6 ($1,095), Sunroof and Spoiler Package ($1,275, dual-pane sunroof w/power sunshade, rear spoiler), Convenience Package ($875, heated front seats and steering wheel, auto-dimming rearview mirror, carpeted front, rear, and trunk mats), Driver Confidence Package ($495, rear cross-traffic alert, rear park assist, blind spot alert), Cajun Red Tintcoat ($395).
  • Base Price: $32,190
  • As Tested: $35,230

Performance Pros

Chevrolet Impala
  • The Impala's steering system is nicely weighted and represents a step up from competitors like the Ford Taurus, Hyundai Azera, and Toyota Avalon.
  • A long 111.7-inch wheelbase easily dampens most road imperfections.
  • When equipped with the 3.6-liter V6, the Impala generates a respectable zero to 60 mph time of 6.8 seconds.

Performance Cons

  • The optional 20-inch wheels transfer quite a bit of road noise into the cabin.
  • The six-speed transmission doesn't shift very smoothly – especially when mated to the standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine.
  • Unlike the smaller Malibu, Chevrolet's latest turbocharged engine technology isn't available on the Impala.

Interior Pros

  • Room for four adults – five in a pinch – in an interior that's fairly spacious for the class.
  • There's plenty of cabin storage, including a center console large enough to hold a shoebox.
  • Roomy 18.8 cubic feet of cargo space in the trunk.

Interior Cons

Chevrolet Impala
  • The Impala's cabin features too many different materials, making what should be a good design look confusing.
  • Dashboard design is too busy, detracting from the overall appearance of the interior.
  • The rear seat is narrow for such a large sedan and accommodates only two adults comfortably.

Our Favorite Thing

The Impala's nicely weighted steering and well-controlled ride make it standout in the full-size sedan class.

Our Least Favorite Thing

An overly complex dash and mish-mash of materials detract from what is otherwise a comfortable and spacious interior.

Right For

Chevrolet Impala

Families – Even as most families move away from sedans, the Impala's blend of style, handling, and comfort make it a real alternative to many crossover SUVs.

Wrong For

Safety Focused – Although a rearview camera is now standard across the lineup, blind spot detection and rear cross-traffic alert are only standard on the top-level Premier trim, while optional on the LT and unavailable on the LS. In addition, advanced active safety features like adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and lane departure warning – standard on the Avalon and optional on the Taurus – are only available on Premier models equipped with the Premier Confidence Package ($1,275)

The Bottom Line

Sleek styling, a smooth ride, and satisfactory interior room make the 2018 Chevrolet Impala a good value in the full-size sedan class.
