Today’s finest sport sedans demonstrate not only high performance power and handling but also luxurious amenities and the latest in connectivity. With the recently updated Mercedes-AMG C63 and BMW M3 as its primary targets, the Cadillac ATS-V comes to market with impressive powertrain and handling stats.
What's New for 2018
The 2018 ATS-V, whether in sedan or coupe form, receives an updated infotainment system that features a more intuitive interface, over-the-air future updates, new screen icon layouts, and certain vehicle commands that can be controlled via an Apple Watch.
Choosing Your Cadillac ATS-V
The sedan starts at $64,590 (including $995 destination fee) and the coupe is available from $66,790.
No matter which body style, there is just one engine offered – a twin-turbocharged 3.6-liter V6 with peak values of 464 horsepower and 445 foot-pounds of torque. Power is routed through a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission ($2,000) and to the ground via an electronically controlled limited slip differential. A high-performance Brembo brake system is standard.
The six-speed manual benefits from an automatic rev-matching system and no-lift shift programming while both transmissions feature launch control systems that help the ATS-V hit 60 miles per hour in 3.8 seconds.
The models equipped with the manual transmission are EPA rated at 16 miles per gallon in the city, 23 highway, and 19 combined while the automatic achieves mpg ratings of 17/ 25 / 20.
There are several major option packs. The $5,995 Track Performance Package includes a performance data and video recorder that allows owners to film their track heroics and overlay telemetry data, and the Carbon Fiber Package, which adds a bunch of flashy accents. It's also available separately for $5,000.
Instead of the Track Performance Package, the Luxury Package can selected for $2,500. This includes an updated navigation system (available separately for $1,350), a Bose surround audio system, and a split-folding rear seat.
Recaro-branded sport seats ($2,300) are available and feature 16-way adjustment, heating, and adjustable side bolsters.
Blind spot detection, lane keep assist, and forward collision alert are available in the Safety and Security Package for $2,150, however, this package is not available with the Track Performance Package nor does it include an automatic emergency braking system.
Different wheel styles – all 18-inch arrangements – are available and can be wrapped in summer tire tread.
Some stand alone options are a head-up display ($700), a sunroof ($1,050), suede microfiber steering wheel ($300) and red or dark gold painted brake calipers for $595.
It doesn't have the cachet of AMG or BMW M, but the Cadillac ATS-V is a performance charmer and looks the part too. We recommend the coupe. Sure, it's more expensive but it's also more stylish, and the sedan's back seat is so disappointing that there's not a lot to lose by going with the two-door option.
