Choosing Your Volvo XC90
One year removed from the introduction of an all-new model, the 2017 XC90 continues to garner praise and awards from industry critics. Importantly, it is also the best-selling Volvo model, easily outpacing the compact XC60 SUV.
Shoppers considering the base T5 model have a choice of standard front-wheel or available all-wheel drive. Momentum and R-Design trims are available.
The all-wheel drive T6 edition and the T8 Plug-in Hybrid are offered in Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription packages. The range-topping Excellence is available in one trim.
All T5 models are powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine making 240 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. This model is rated at 22 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway for front-wheel drive and 22 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway for the all-wheel drive version.
The XC90 T6 is powered by a turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine making 316 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. This model makes an EPA-estimated 20 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. Both gasoline engines are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The all-wheel drive XC90 T8 PHEV and Excellence models offer the supercharged and turbocharged engine with electrification. This model produces 400 horsepower and 472 pound-feet of torque and makes an EPA-estimated 54 MPGe.
Standard equipment includes 18-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry, a power liftgate, front collision mitigation support, lane keeping assist, and rear park assist. Also standard is a panoramic sunroof with a power sunshade, 10-way power front seats with lumbar support, navigation, a high-performance audio package, and a rearview camera.
T5 Momentum and R-Design
Volvo prices the 2017 XC90 T5 FWD Momentum from $46,745 (destination included). Add $5,400 for R-Design trim. Choose all-wheel drive and add $2,000 to your cost. The T5 is a two-row model.
Six package options are available: T5 Momentum Plus ($1,100), Vision ($1,950), Climate ($1,550), Climate with Graphical Head-up Display ($2,450), Convenience $1,800), and Bowers & Wilkins Sound ($2,650).
The Momentum Plus package includes active bending lights, upgraded LED headlights, a larger drive display, and dark flame birch wood inlays. The Vision package brings in a 360-degree surround view camera, BLIS, and retractable rear view camera.
The Climate package adds heating elements for the windshield, the washer nozzles, steering wheel, and the seats. The Convenience package adds safety features and cargo department upgrades.
T6 Momentum, R- Design, and Inscription
Volvo prices the 2017 XC90 T6 Momentum from $52,595 (destination included). Add $4,000 for the R-Design trim or $5,600 for the Inscription model. The T6 is a three-row model.
The same six package options offered at the T5 level carry over to the T6.
T8 Plug-In Hybrid
Volvo prices the 2017 XC90 T8 Plug-In Hybrid from $72,795 (destination included). An R-Design package is standard with 20-inch diamond cut alloy wheels, metal mesh aluminum inlays, and upgraded Nappa leather. Add $1,600 for the Inscription trim.
Four package options are available: Vision ($1,950), Climate ($800), Climate with HUD ($1,700), and Convenience ($1,800).
Excellence
If you never imagined a six-figure Volvo, think again. The XC90 Excellence package pulls out all the stops. Based on the T8 Plug-In Hybrid, this model places the emphasis on luxury. It also offers only four seating positions. Volvo prices the 2017 XC90 Excellence from $105,895 (destination included).
All four seats are the same, upholstered with perforated fine Nappa leather. Other standout features include a rear cooling compartment beverage cooler, and a special rear seat console.
Even if you don’t usually need the extra seats, the three-row T6 model is useful for those times you’re in a pinch and need additional passenger carrying room. Regardless, this model offers a generous 85.7 cubic feet of maximum cargo capacity behind the first row.
