Model Preview

Editor's Note: As of January 2017, Mercedes-Benz has not yet released the E450 here in the U.S. At this time, it's still unclear if the model will in fact be introduced or if the model has been scrapped entirely. Stay tuned for the latest info as it becomes available. For now, please feel free to research the E300, E400 and E550 and check out our preview for the redesigned 2018 E-Class Coupe.

For the 2017 model year, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class has undergone a complete redesign to help keep pace with the ever-changing luxury-car realm and align it with the new S-Class. With this redesign comes a handful of new variants, and one of those is the E450.

The 2017 Mercedes-Benz E450 will be nearly identical to the base E-Class that the automaker recently unveiled. This includes a 2.6-inch-longer wheelbase and an extra 1.7 inches of length along with an elongated hood with grilles that vary depending on if you choose the luxury or sport model. Up front, there are also totally redesigned headlights and a new apron. Down the sides, Mercedes made the character lines smoother, while the D-pillar takes on more of a coupe-like angle than before. Around back, are brand-new taillights, a shapelier trunk lid, a new bumper and insert, and sportier exhaust outlets.

The interior of the E450 will also mimic the fully redesigned look of the entire E-Class lineup. The new look includes a new steering wheel, dual screens on the dash for the instrument panel and 12.3-inch infotainment system, round air vents, an angled center stack with touch-sensitive buttons, and fully reworked seats. Also new is a 64-color ambient lighting system.

The powertrain for the E450 remains a bit of a mystery, but we do know that it will use a V-6 engine. A possible option is a retuned version of the current-generation E400’s 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6 with is output cranked up to the 350-horsepower mark, putting it slightly higher than its main competitor, the BMW 535i. Gear shifting will likely be handled by a nine-speed auto transmission, and 4MATIC all-wheel drive will likely be an option.

Pricing and Release Date

Without the model having made its official debut yet, pricing information is still unavailable. As for a release date, the standard E-Class hit showrooms in the summer of 2016, but an ETA is not yet available for the E450.
