Compact crossovers are among the most important vehicle classes on the market, with automakers from the most affordable luxury brand to the finest German and Japanese luxury giants getting in on the action. Since it debuted in 2013, the Mazda CX-5 has been one of the segment's stars. That's unlikely to change in 2017.
What's New for 2017
The 2017 CX-5 received its first full redesign, with a snazzy exterior and an updated interior. However, its dimensions carry on for a fifth year. This year, the base engine and the manual transmission are no longer available. Newly available features, including a heated steering wheel, heated driver and front passenger seats, and a power liftgate are among the most significant equipment tweaks.
Choosing Your Mazda CX-5
For 2017, Mazda narrowed the CX-5’s powertrain offering to just one: a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine comes paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Enthusiasts are still mourning the last-gen CX-5's six-speed manual. Even with an engine making 187 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque, this model delivers an EPA-estimated 24 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway (one less mpg for all-wheel drive).
Standard cargo space measures 30.9 cubic feet or 59.6 cubic feet with the rear seat folded, within the range of what most competing models offer. If you need to pull a small trailer, all models supply a 2,000-pound towing capacity.
Standard equipment includes automatic headlights, alloy wheels, air conditioning, push-button start, and a four-speaker audio system. Three trim levels are available: Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring.
Start your search with the Touring edition and you’ll find an affordable middle ground with many of the convenience features customers want. Spend an extra $780 for the Preferred Equipment package and you’ll get navigation, the Bose audio system, a power liftgate, and a power moonroof.
