: Very Good vehicle. Very good and close to being the best vehicle in its class.

: Good vehicle. Decent, but not quite the best. Often affordable, but lacking key features found in vehicles of the same class.

Overview

Piloting a Lincoln MKZ Hybrid lets you give into a bit of indulgence, but without the guilt. The Hybrid edition takes the quietness and relaxation of the regular midsize Lincoln, but marries it to an efficient gasoline/electric powertrain. While the Hybrid is hardly a candidate for breathtaking motoring, it fits right in with the character of this premium sedan. Best of all, the Hybrid comes with the same standard equipment and tech options as the standard MKZ. Therefore, you need never feel as if you're missing out on anything, just because you like to lessen your impact on the environment.

What's New for 2017

Like the regular gas-engine MKZ, the MKZ Hybrid has been abundantly freshened for 2017, led by a fresh grille that turns aside from the previous “split wing” theme. It also helps establish Lincoln’s next design generation. Inside is a new “floating” center console, accompanied by a pushbutton gear selector. New switches and dials have replaced the prior slider adjustments, to control ventilation and audio.

Choosing Your Lincoln MKZ Hybrid

All MKZ Hybrids have front-wheel drive, combining an Atkinson-cycle 2-liter, four-cylinder gasoline engine with a 35 kW electric motor and a 1.4 kWh lithium-ion battery. Net output is 188 horsepower, producing 129 pound-feet of torque. The hybrid system teams with a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

Fuel economy is estimated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) at 41 mpg in city driving and 38 mpg on the highway (40 mpg combined). That’s vastly better than the estimate for the four-cylinder gas-engine MKZ: just 21/31 mpg (city/highway), or 24 mpg combined.

Like the gas-engine MKZ, the Hybrid comes in three trim levels, or with a Black Label interior package:

Lincoln MKZ Hybrid

Premiere:

The base MKZ Hybrid comes abundantly equipped, similar to the gas-engine model, including heated 10-way power front seats, leatherette upholstery, a backup camera, adaptive suspension dampers, 60/40 split-folding rear seat, 11-speaker audio, USB input, and iPod integration. Sync 3 infotainment has replaced the previous MyLincoln Touch system. Adaptive high-intensity-discharge headlights are standard, and alloy wheels hold 18-inch tires.

Select:

Moving up to Select trim level adds a wood-trimmed steering wheel, leather upholstery, heated power-folding outside mirrors, auto-dimming inside mirror, power-adjustable steering column, and interior ambient lighting. A power trunk lid and a blind-spot information system are optional. So is a moonroof—either a $1,200 single-pane version or the $2,995 retractable panoramic roof that incorporates a sliding glass panel. Claimed to have the largest opening of any sedan, the panoramic moonroof is one of the MKZ Hybrid's main attractions. A 14-speaker Revel audio system also is available. The optional Technology Package incorporates adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane-departure assist, active parking assist, pedestrian detection, and a collision warning system.

Reserve:

Stepping up another notch, Reserve trim adds a navigation system, blind-spot information system with cross-traffic alert, heated/cooled front seats, perforated leather upholstery, a power trunk lid, an embedded modem, and 19-inch wheels.

Black Label:

The MKZ Hybrid is available with a choice of three Lincoln Black Label packages that include higher-grade trims and finishes: Chalet, Vineyard and Thoroughbred. Beginning with the Reserve's level of equipment, the Black Label sedans also come with four years of scheduled maintenance and free car washes, as well as remote car delivery. A concierge service offers in-home design consultation. Also included are Revel 20-speaker audio, a moonroof, power rear sunshade, and heated wood-trimmed steering wheel.

CarsDirect Tip

Like the gas-engine MKZ, the Hybrid offers the best balance of features and price in the Select trim level. That version comes standard with most of the features expected in this price class; but of course, options can be added. A loaded Reserve or Black Label edition can get quite expensive. If you enjoy open-roofed driving, you may as well go all the way with that spectacular panoramic glass roof option.
