Second to the weighty LX 570 in both size and price, the GX 460 sport-utility vehicle stands ready to bring traditional Lexus refinement and technology as far off-road as possible. The level of tasteful luxury and solid assembly expected from the upscale brand sits astride a platform that’s capable of serious challenging-terrain duties. Seven-passenger, three-row seating is standard.
What's New for 2017
A new Sport Design Package includes a lower front garnish, rear-bumper spoiler, redesigned outside mirror covers, and gray metallic paint on 18-inch aluminum wheels. Heated/ventilated front seats now are optional for the base model. Captain’s chairs are available with Premium trim level, and standard on the Luxury edition.
Choosing Your Lexus GX 460
Underneath its impeccable paint and luxurious interior, the GX 460 is an old-school SUV, retaining body-on-frame construction and V8 power. Standard full-time four-wheel drive incorporates a low-range transfer gear to provide rock-crawling capabilities well beyond what one would expect from a vehicle wearing a Lexus badge.
Each GX 460 is powered by a 4.6-liter V8 that sends 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque to all four wheels, via a six-speed automatic transmission. The computer-managed four-wheel drive system features a Torsen limited-slip center differential. A Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System promises both excellent on-road stability and maximum off-road wheel travel. On-road or off, up to seven occupants can relish the GX’s high-quality materials, exceptional fit and finish, and posh comfort.
Fuel economy is estimated at 15 mpg in city driving and 18 mpg on the highway (17 mpg combined). That’s slightly better than the LX 570, but far short of thrifty. A GX 460 can reach 60 mph in 7.8 seconds.
Vehicle control may be enhanced by optional Crawl Control, which modulates the throttle and brakes over steep terrain. It comes in a Driver Support Package that also includes lane-departure alert, a pre-collision system, driver attention monitor, and front/side view camera system.
The GX 460 is available in three trim levels:
Unless you require all available electronic systems or riders insist on maximum ride comfort of the Luxury's rear air suspension, Premium trim brings some upscale dress and features at a more agreeable price. Active-safety features are in short supply for an SUV in this class, unless you opt for the Driver Support Package.
