Overview

When the QX80 officially debuted in 2014, it wasn’t really a new model. Instead, it was a part of INFINITI's new model-naming restructure. The vehicle’s roots stretched back to the 2004 emergence of the QX56 full-size SUV. INFINITI had renamed that QX56 the QX in 2012, then switched to QX80 in 2014. Three seasons later, the QX80 still looks similar to the 2014 model, but some notable changes have been made to this large SUV, including a rather hefty freshening for the 2015 model year.

What's New for 2017

Forward emergency braking with pedestrian detection has been added to the optional Driver Assistance Package (standard on Limited). All models now include trailer sway control.

INFINITI QX80

Choosing Your INFINITI QX80

Unique appearance details separate the QX80 from key rivals like the Cadillac Escalade and Lexus LX 570, though not everyone appreciates the bold look. Each QX80 contains the same engine: a 5.6-liter V8 that produces 400 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque. This powerful V8 mates with a seven-speed automatic transmission. Only one decision has to be made in the drivetrain department: whether you want rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive.

With that kind of power in a heavy vehicle, fuel economy is hardly a strong point, EPA-estimated at 14 mpg in city driving and 20 mpg on the highway. Four-wheel drive makes it even less thrifty, 13/19 mpg (city/highway). When properly equipped, towing capacity is 8,500 pounds.

Two trim levels are offered: base and Limited.

INFINITI QX80

Base

In base trim, the rear-wheel drive QX80 starts at $64,845 (destination charge included), while the four-wheel drive model is priced at $67,945. Even the base QX80 comes standard with a wealth of premium features, rivaling any full-size luxury SUV on the road. These include a sunroof, roof rails, a power liftgate, INFINITI Intelligent Key, leather-appointed seating, a 10-way power driver’s seat and 8-way power passenger seat, and mocha burl trim. Bluetooth audio streaming, an eight-inch color touchscreen, Bose 13-speaker audio, a 360-degree camera system with moving object detection, active front head restraints, front/rear parking sensors, navigation system, and automatic tri-zone climate control also are standard.

INFINITI QX80

Limited AWD

Available only with four-wheel drive for $90,445 (destination charge included), the Limited gets a more distinctive look, featuring dark chrome 22-inch alloy wheels, dark chrome interior trim, stainless steel running board caps with rubber grips, welcome lighting under the running boards, darkened headlight and taillamp inner lenses, and dark chrome windshield pillar covers. The unique interior features semi-aniline Truffle Brown leather with a quilted pattern, plus open-pore wood trim. Grab handles are leather-covered, and the Limited’s center stack holds unique silver switchgear. Option groups available on the base QX80 are standard in the Limited, including Driver Assistance, Tire and Wheel, Theater, and Deluxe Technology.

Buyers of the base QX80 can choose from five option packages:

  • Driver Assistance Package: Adds $2,500 to the base price, providing plenty of active safety features. They include backup collision intervention, predictive forward collision warning and emergency braking, lane-departure warning and prevention, backup collision intervention, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot intervention, Distance Control Assist, and a steering wheel-mounted switch for Safety Shield Technologies.
  • Theater Package: For $2,400, you can keep rear passengers entertained. Option group includes two 7-inch monitors in front headrests, a wireless remote, two sets of wireless headphones, A/V input jacks, 120-volt outlet, and heated outboard second-row seats.
  • Tire and Wheel Package: Lay out an extra $2,800 and INFINITI will supply a set of 22-inch, 14-spoke forged alloy wheels wrapped in all-season performance tires.
  • Split Bench Seat Package: At no extra cost, INFINITI will replace the second-row captain's chairs with a 60/40 split bench, which increases seating capacity from seven to eight.
  • Deluxe Technology Package: For $5,200, this package adds Hydraulic Body Motion Control, climate-controlled front seats, 15-speaker Bose surround-sound audio, semi-aniline leather seating, Stratford burl trim, chrome mirror caps, second-row footwell lighting, Advance Climate Control, headlight washers, pre-crash front seatbelts, and adaptive headlights.
CarsDirect Tip

Considering how much is included with the base QX80, it seems to be the sensible choice. However, we strongly recommend adding the active safety features in the moderately priced Driver Assistance Package (which really should be standard in a vehicle of this class). Moving up to a Limited does bring a long list of additional features, but at a whopping $22,500 premium. Of course, adding several of those option groups individually can also push the total outlay substantially upward.

You'll find a handful of full-bodied luxury SUVs on the market and the INFINITI QX80 is among the plushest. This model offers all the expected trappings and then some, transforming this truck-like SUV into a fashion statement.

Pricing and Equipment

Prices for the 2017 INFINITI QX80 begin at $63,850 (including $995 for destination) for the base rear-drive model or $66,950 for the QX80 4WD which, shocker, comes with four-wheel drive. We think the standard 4WD is where most buyers will begin their search, discovering the following features:

  • Navigation with weather and traffic alerts
  • Power rear liftgate
  • Power sliding glass moonroof
  • Keyless entry with push-button start
  • 13-speaker Bose audio system
  • Power tilt and telescopic steering column
  • Leather seats
  • Tri-zone climate control
  • Automatic headlights with high beam assist
  • Body-colored running boards with splash guards
  • Under radiator skid plate

The two base models offer several package options, including driver assistance ($2,900), theater ($2,400), tire and wheel ($2,800), and a deluxe technology package ($5,200). The last package brings in hydraulic body motion control, headlight washers, wood trim, semi-aniline leather seats, climate control seats, and an upgrade to the standard Bose audio system. Add $450 if you desire to transform your SUV into a rolling wifi hotspot.

Then there is this huge leap to the Limited edition ($89,450), a four-wheel-drive model that pulls out all the stops. Here, you’ll find ample 22-inch wheels with a dark chrome finish, stainless steel side pipes with welcome lighting, fine ash wood, truffle brown leather seats, and an ultra suede headliner and pillars. All available packages are included as well.

The 2017 INFINITI QX80's sole powertrain is a 5.6-liter V8 engine with 400 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque. It works alongside a seven-speed automatic transmission and returns an EPA-estimated 14 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway (13 city and 19 highway mpg for the QX80 4WD models).

Performance Pros

INFINITI QX80
  • A strong powertrain moves this burly SUV without any noticeable weak spots. The transmission shifts smoothly, finding the right gear for the moment.
  • The truck-based QX80's body delivers adequate off-road ability for most owners. It lacks the whizbang off-road tech and locking differentials of a Range Rover, but there is plenty of power, a low-range gearbox, and a lofty ride height available.
  • The INFINITI QX80 has an 8,500-pound trailering rating with an Integrated Class IV tow hitch and 7-pin wiring harness with cover included. When you're ready, engage the tow mode and the throttle response and engine shift points automatically adjust to handle the added load.

Performance Cons

  • If you're looking for an engaging driving experience in the QX80, you'll be disappointed. The steering is finger-light and devoid of feedback and the tall body rolls heavily through turns.
  • Fuel economy in this segment ranges from bad to terrible (unless you're one of the seven people that bought a diesel Range Rover), and the QX80 is no different. Its massive weight, poor aerodynamics, and thirsty engine conspire to drag down fuel economy.

Interior Pros

  • The QX80's cabin feels plush and exclusive. There's high-quality, carefully fitted materials generously applied throughout the interior.
  • Choose the Limited edition and INFINITI raises the quality bar a full notch. Comfortable quilted leather seats, silver accent piping, and real wood trim stress the wow factor.
  • There's room for up to eight, although we would keep the second-row captain's chairs instead of opting for the no-cost three-place bench seat swap.

Interior Cons

INFINITI QX80
  • Cargo space behind the third-row seat measures 16.7 cubic feet, or about as much space as a midsize sedan's trunk. However, that's mostly vertical space, so plan accordingly.
  • Three youngsters or two adults can fit in the third row, but don't try placing three adults back there, otherwise you'll be squeezing them in.

The Most Pleasant Surprise

The existing forward-collision warning system adds a very helpful pedestrian warning feature for 2017.

The Least Pleasant Surprise

Size matters and when it comes to parking, that's a challenge with the QX80. Instead, you'll be looking for ways to avoid parallel parking at all costs.

The Bottom Line

The QX80 Limited brings in every conceivable option and pushes this SUV's final price above $90,000, which will pinch the average consumer's wallet. We think the QX80 4WD with the driver assistance and theater packages offers a well-appointed vehicle for about $76,000.
