The Honda Clarity Electric, Clarity Plug-In Hybrid, and Clarity Fuel Cell comprise the automaker's greenest models. The 2019 Honda Clarity Electric is powered by an electric motor with an 89-mile range, but it's only available in California and Oregon – and even there you can only lease it.
What's New for 2019
Unchanged for 2019, the Clarity Electric continues as the single-model sedan first introduced two years ago.
Choosing Your Honda Clarity Electric
The Honda Clarity Electric is powered by a 120-kW electric motor that generates 161 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque. This motor feeds a 25.5kWh lithium-ion battery pack, and helps the Clarity Electric return an EPA-estimated 126 miles per gallon of gasoline equivalent (MPGe) city, 103 MPGe highway, and 114 combined. As we previously mentioned, it has an all-electric range of 89 miles.
The Clarity Electric has DC fast charging capability as standard, which helps it restore 80 percent of the battery’s capacity in 30 minutes. With a Level 2 charger (240 volts), Honda says you can fully power up in 3.5 hours, while a Level 1 charger (120 volts) fully charges the battery in 19 hours.
Available only in one trim, the Clarity Electric comes equipped with an 8-inch touchscreen that governs most of the cabin features, including an eight-speaker audio system and Android Auto/Apple CarPlay smartphone integration. The touchscreen also displays 3D satellite navigation with lane guidance and voice control.
Full LED headlights and taillights are standard, as is keyless entry, push-button start, and 18-inch alloy wheels. Honda say 80 percent of the Clarity Electric’s interior is made from recycled materials, while the perforated leather seats are heated and power-adjustable in the front. The steering wheel is also wrapped in leather.
The Clarity Electric is equipped with Honda Sensing as standard. This suite of safety tools includes adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow, lane keeping assist, automatic emergency braking, and a road departure mitigation system. There’s also a rearview camera, seven airbags, forward collision warning, and the car locks itself when the key is removed.
The Clarity Electric also features a number of range-boosting features controllable via the HondaLink app. It’s possible to remotely pre-set the cabin temperature using the dual-zone climate control while the car is charging, helping to minimize battery life on the move. The app also provides information on estimated driving range and other nearby charging stations for optimal journey planning.
Consumers looking for an electric vehicle to lease in California or Oregon have a technology-rich option in the 2019 Honda Clarity Electric. With one trim and no option packages available, the only decisions buyers need to make involve paint and interior color.
