Overview

The Range Rover Evoque is the best-selling Land Rover in the manufacturer’s line-up. A solid combination of styling, quality and value has earned this versatile luxury crossover more than 165 awards since its release in 2011, not to mention a loyal following of driving enthusiasts.

What's New for 2016

A new infotainment system that’s easier to navigate will offer screen-swiping capabilities, smartphone style. The Evoque will be the first Land Rover to offer all-LED adaptive headlamps for superior night visibility and safety. A new front bumper enhances the crossover’s modern, beefy design, while an extended interior and exterior color palette, as well as three additional alloy wheel designs have been added to the already large range of options. The trim level designations have been renamed SE, SE Premium, HSE and HSE Dynamic to align the model with the Range Rover family of products.

The 2016 Evoque continues with the same platform but has been fitted with lighter materials to enhance fuel efficiency and performance. These improvements make the model the most fuel-efficient vehicle Land Rover has ever produced with reported figures of 21 mpg city and 30 mpg highway.

Choosing Your Land Rover Range Rover Evoque

The Evoque comes available with a large range of options, making it as customizable as you need it to be. For 2016, there are 13 exterior colors and 14 interior color combinations. It may be beautiful, but there’s brawn built into it with a 2-liter 240-horsepower powertrain. It is, after all, a Land Rover.

All Evoques are four-wheel drive and engineered to be just at home adeptly four-wheeling in rough terrain as they are during a leisurely weekend drive to the country club. A series of full-time electronic systems keep the driver in confident control through all conditions. The Adaptive Dynamic System tunes the suspension while features like Terrain Response, Hill Descent Control (HDC), Dynamic and Roll Stability Controls, coupled with a nine-speed automatic transmission that paddle shifts into sport mode, means no terrain is off limits.

A three-door coupe version is available in the SE Premium and HSE Dynamic trims.

The four trim packages are:

Land Rover Range Rover Evoque

Range Rover Evoque SE

The $42,570 MSRP entry-level package is luxuriously equipped with 12-way grained leather seats, elegant interior mood lighting, a 380-watt 11-speaker sound system, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, InControl Touch Navigation and front & rear parking distance control with a rearview camera to aid in effortless parallel parking.

Land Rover Range Rover Evoque

Range Rover Evoque SE Premium Package

The Premium Package has all the conveniences of the SE with more rugged exterior styling defined by black mirror caps and grille bars. Additional convenience and safety features include a power tailgate, access to InControl Apps, navigation with off-road maps, automatically-leveling xenon headlamps, front foglamps, rain-sensing wipers, and mirrors that automatically dip to aid parking when reverse gear is engaged.

Land Rover Range Rover Evoque

Range Rover Evoque HSE

The HSE adds sophistication and a touch of bling to the Evoque with metallic grille bars, 19-inch 10-spoke alloy wheels, real wood trim interiors and Oxford leather with two-tone seats. The interior mood lighting controls can be configured to ten colors via the touchscreen. A fixed panoramic glass roof with an integrated power sun blind and heated front seats complete the HSE’s special touches. A blind spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert adds to the safety features.

This trim level can be upgraded to the optional full LED lamps, which are a first for all Land Rover models.

Land Rover Range Rover Evoque

Range Rover Evoque HSE Dynamic

Named for Dynamic body styling and designed to look sporty and aggressive enough for all terrains with rugged black mirror caps and hood vents, a distinctive honeycomb mesh grille, anthracite sills, bright tailpipes and a rear spoiler.

Lower trim packages can upgrade to select higher-end touches through option packages.

  • A rear-seat entertainment system with two headrest-mounted screens is available as an option for all trims except the SE.
  • A Black Package for the HSE Dynamic version includes darkened fog and headlights and 20-inch wheels to coordinate with the black trim.
  • Optional driver assistance features are expanded to include lane keeping aid, driver condition monitoring, autonomous emergency braking, head-up display and a 360-degree camera.
CarsDirect Tip

There's more than a $12,000 difference between the SE and the HSE Dynamic, while additional upgrades can add up quickly. The SE Premium package is our pick. For a little more than $3,000, it adds rugged styling and enough features to make it the best value.

Compact, capable and well-adapted to urban life, the Evoque is the Range Rover for city dwellers. It’s also the logical choice for those seeking a smaller price tag and gas bills.

Pricing and Equipment

The cost of entry for the Evoque is just $41,000 -- low for a Land Rover. All four models are powered by a 240-horsepower 2-liter four-cylinder. The entry level SE comes standard with:

  • 18-inch alloy wheels
  • 12-Way grained leather seats
  • Front and rear park distance control
  • Rain-sensing windshield wipers

We were lucky enough to test out the HSE with the all-glass roof and a host of luxurious interior accessories -- the navigation really came in handy during testing.

Performance Pros

Land Rover Range Rover Evoque

The Evoque performs well in both city and highway traffic. It's sporty, quick and a pleasure to drive. Some standouts:

  • This Rover not only looks more agile, it handles that way too. The sensitive power steering and independent suspension deliver the crisp, responsive ride we want to navigate city traffic.
  • We appreciate the pep of the Evoque's 240 horsepower. Though no powerhouse, it still packs a punch.

Performance Cons

  • We aren't crazy about the coarse sound of the engine when accelerating.
  • Obviously, a smaller, lower-profile Range Rover is less adept at off-roading -- but most who buy the Evoque are buying it for city driving.

Interior Pros

This is where the Evoque truly shines. The interior is simply beautiful. It‘s sleek with a range of cool metallic or wood trims. The cabin feels well-assembled, with a solid, hand-crafted look.

Interior Cons

  • With a high beltline and low-profile roof, you are bound to lose some interior space. It’s hard, though, to be critical of Land Rover for this because of the corresponding gains in both aesthetics and urban drivability.
  • Back seats are hard to reach in three-door models.
  • With so many features and technology packages available, it is easy to raise the price on the Evoque. In an ideal world, more would come standard. But that's true for any brand.

The Most Pleasant Surprise

The most pleasant surprise from the new Evoque was the interior. It is richly detailed and provides a refined cabin experience. The power-adjustable seats are stylishly trimmed and bolstered for comfort.

The Least Pleasant Surprise

Even in the five-door Evoque, there simply isn't much rear seat legroom for adults, especially tall ones. As for the three-door, we would not recommend it if you are expecting to have passengers in the rear seats very often.

The Bottom Line

Land Rover Range Rover Evoque

The Evoque takes city driving to another level. Richly appointed interiors welcome occupants, while the four-cylinder turbo and independent suspension make city driving a pleasure. As for the exterior, we find its low-profile stance graceful and elegant -- even it sacrifices some interior space.
