Like its fellow 6-Series models, the Gran Coupe has an array of features including keyless entry, front and rear parking assist, a tilting panel roof with power sunshade, and power front seats with a 10-way adjustable function. LED fog lights and taillights provide excellent visibility, and the start-stop feature that switches off the engine when the car stops does help improve fuel economy a little.
The center console is well designed and easy to navigate, and the Bang & Olufsen speakers makes listening to music a joy. iPod connectivity, a USB auxiliary input, voice-controlled navigation and real-time traffic monitoring are all accounted for, and the intuitive iDrive screen acts as home base for all technological needs.
Safety is not forgotten, and the Gran Coupe comes standard with antilock brakes, tire pressure monitoring, xenon headlights, stability and traction control, and an active roll stabilization feature, available for no extra cost. BMW Assist comes free of charge as well, providing live roadside assistance and extra security features to protect against accidents and ensure safety should one occur.
Option groups include the Luxury Seating Package, with front ventilated and multi-contour seats, four-zone automatic climate control, and power sunshades for rear and side windows; the Cold Weather Package with heated front and rear seats; and the M Sport Package with alpine white trim, 19-inch performance tires and anthracite alcantara headliner.
While none of these options is necessary to enjoy the 660i Gran Coupe, we'd like to see more of them on the standard features list. For a starting price of $76,000, we'd like to have heated seats in our car, please.
The 640i definitely puts luxury above performance, which may disappoint some BMW fans. Although its exterior is sufficiently stylish, and its V6 pleasantly strong, the Gran Coupe lacks the full sport driving experience that many other models provide. A sluggish response time and slightly out-offocus handling will frustrate experienced sports car aficionados and speed demons alike. It is challenging to offer the best of sedan and a coupe, and the Gran Coupe finds more success in beautiful trim and helpful interactive technology than it does in the way of driving excitement.
